This weekend I was at a convention. “Life, the universe, and everything” or “LTUE” for short in Provo, Utah. Really great convention. I met a tonne of cool people and had a great time.
I even met L.E. Modesitt, and I won’t lie I got a little star struck there. I’ve been reading his books since I was a teenager. That was a lot of fun, and he was a pretty nice guy.
One reason I like going to all these conventions is I find it really motivating. When I go to these conventions its really nice to talk directly to people. Is it a huge boost to one’s ego? Yes. Does it equal financial success? Not always.
Doing webcomics is kind of a long slog and doesn’t always grant the rewards you hope for. It is kind of hard to continually make content and offer it up for free. Then you have to justify the time you spent to the wife and family. It can be difficult.
When I get a chance to talk face to face with people at these conventions it’s very nice to feel appreciated there. I don’t kid myself, it’s not like I’m curing cancer or anything, but it entertains my fellow nerds and gives them a laugh. That’s all I need motivation and it keeps me doing the thing that I love.
